DEALING WITH BESETTING SINS

Hebrews 12: 1
Wherefore,
seeing we also are encompassed about with so great a cloud or witnesses, let us
lay aside every weight, and the sin which doth so easily beset us, and let us
run with patience the race that is set before us.
Looking unto
Jesus, the author and finisher of our faith; who for the joy that was set
before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is set down at the right
hand of the throne of God.
Now in a
stadium, we notice that every race and its crowd of witnesses. And that’s what
the scripture says about us (believers) that as we are encompassed with such a
great kind of crowd, we should lay aside every weight and sin which easily
besets us. From which we derive our theme, dealing with besetting sins.
Besetting sins
are simply habitual sins. Sins that we are addicted to. The sin that occurs more frequently in our
lives. The sin that we do even without temptation. In fact they are sins we
love to commit.
So if I were
to ask you that which of the commandments would you want God to change? It will
be Thou shall not fornicate.
Why? Because
we enjoy this sin. We love it and would even go in for it without being
tempted. And this then becomes your besetting sin.
For some it
is ladies, for others it is money, for others it is lust, others is appetite
and these have prevented us. We need to conquer them, they are besetting sins.
And the
bible says that if we are not able to conquer these besetting sins, then we
cannot win the race. Most people have fallen out because of besetting sins
because they have allowed these sins to cripple them. The thing is that not all
the body wants that you have to satisfy it with. We need discipline. Sin is an
enemy of longevity that is why nothing quenches immortality like immorality.
You must be committed to your course and focus.
Even though
God loves us all equally, He treats us differently. Everyone has the price to
pay for his or her testimony. The bible says: The foundation of the Lord stand
sure nevertheless let everyone who knows God depart from iniquities because the
Lord knows them that are His. Your name might be in your church, but that God
knows you? It also says righteousness
exalts a nation and sin is a reproach to any people. So righteousness exalts
but sin demotes. Besetting sins, it has no respect for your anointing. The
anointing notwithstanding, Samson had that problem. Anointed and super natural
yet he still couldn’t withstand besetting sins and whenever we look for Samson,
He will be found in between the thighs of a woman. Besetting sins!!!
David was
also anointed but also couldn’t resist ladies and even at his old age he had a
lady to still come and offer him massage.
So since we
now know besetting things, we need to discover the cause in order to deal with
it. What at all is the cause of this sin? I have categorized them into two.
1. The flesh- When Paul said the good I want to do, am not able to do it, but the evil I don’t want to do, that’s what I find myself doing. And continues to say who shall deliver me from this bondage of this flesh?

This is a
principle in the spiritual realm. The gravity in the spiritual realm that suppresses
and brings man down whenever he wants to go up. It’s a law. Any time you want
to do something, it brings you down. The spirit is willing but the flesh is
weak. What is it that we get rejuvenated once we go to church and decide to
read the bible daily and pray always but yet we still fail in just that same
week. The flesh is weak.
2. Spiritual forces- They work in homes, communities and
at all levels.You can go to a place and notice one kind of sin reigning in that
whole city or place. These are unclean spirits as Jesus would describe them and
these make people live unclean lives and that is why God brought to us the Holy
Spirit which makes you live a holy life if you have the Holy Spirit.
1 Kings 22: 22 – The bible talks about a lying
spirit being cast upon a number of people.
Hosea 5: 4 – this talk about the spirits of woe
Dom. This are the people addicted to things like sex, often termed as the sex
maniac.
Romans 8: 15- this also talks about the spirit of
bondage. This are people who are in bondage to a particular sin, like theft and
some are describes by psychologists as kleptomaniacs. They have the need to take
anything they set their eyes on.
Beloved I
entreat you, you must make up your mind. If you want to pursue God, you must
decide to live a life of purity. And the first thing you need to do is:
1. You need deliverance: This is when
your case is caused by demons and was demonstrated in Mattew 10:1. Giving the
disciples power over unclean spirits.
2. Discipline: meaning doing something
you are supposed to do even when you
don’t feel like it. And conversely I can say discipline means not doing what
you aren’t supposed to do even when you feel like doing it. So that you don’t
allow your erection to dictate your direction. To be honest, no matter how
beautiful a lady is, she can’t force you to fornicate if you are not willing so
if your purposed you can overcome besetting sins. All you need is focus,
purpose, determination and discipline. Daniel 1:8 says Daniel purposed in his
heart not to defile himself with any portion of the Kings meat or drink. He
purposed and no devil was able to overcome him.
3. Association-
You need to guard your association. It is always a key to righteousness and
sometimes a key to sin. Your company is one major influence and you have to
commune and associate with people who lead you to God.
4. Walk in the Spirit: Galatians 5:16. Especially walking in the fear of the spirit of the
Lord. Isaiah 11:2 and 3.
